Typesites review: Typographica

It was a privilege to contribute to Typesites, a fine project curated by Kyle Meyer, and great to justify as “work” some of the many hours I have spent absorbing and admiring Typographica.

Spending some time reading relieved me of my self-righteous initial reaction, and I began to see the composition for what it actually is: a wonderfully orchestrated hierarchy of content meant to envelop the reader at a particular moment in time: when the reader is reading.

You can read my full review of Typographica at Typesites.

I wish I could have written more! I only critiqued one kind of page – a review. Look how much great stuff there is – how the layout and focus change with the content on book reviews, commentary, and each kind of category page: type reviews, book reviews, and commentary. Wonderful.

Why Typesites matters

From the about text:

What once started as an idea for yet another generic website gallery evolved into something that gives much more depth than a normal showcase. Whereas galleries simply post generic designs by the bucketload, we strive to showcase only design that can inspire and teach — and then explain it.

This is exactly the kind of effort we as a web design community need to rally behind: consistent critique of our best work from an educated perspective. Peruse the Typesites archives; you’ll discover both praise and criticism in such detail as you might expect from professionals with a keen design sense and web experience.

We need more of this. To honor greatness.
